Training Teachers and Instructors to Teach in Prisons/Detention Centres
This is the fourth time the EPEA - Malta Branch is offering this course. Each year we managed to improve our services thanks to the feedback given by the various participants.
In Malta, as with some other countries, we have detention centers particularly for 'illegal immigrants' that, although not strictly prisons, have confinement as their main goal. We feel that the atmosphere within such centres is close to a prison, and that potential participants working in such an environment would benefit from this course as well.
Hence the course aims to, by means of a number of lectures from international experts in the field, as well as by sharing our experiences, improve the quality of education in Prisons and Detention Centers. By education we understand both the formal and informal, and work within the parameters as set in the Lisbon Strategy (EU) as well as the recommendations made by the Council of Europe with regards to Education in Prison.
The course is of interest to
a) Teachers working in prisons on a full time or part time basis
b) Administrators of education programmes in Prisons
c) Social workers and others involved in drawing up a sentence plan for prison inmates
d) Leaders and members of NGOs that contribute to education in prison
e) Researchers interested in education in prisons/detention centres
